A Folic Acid Ditty
bare with us as we get nerdy here:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
folic acid gets a lot of hype in this country. however, this is something of which we actually are better served to steer clear.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
why?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
FOLATE, not folic acid, is actually what is so necessary for a really important process that occurs in the body called methylation. methylation is critical for things such as
-tissue differentiation
-detoxification
-nervous system health
-neurotransmitter and hormone production
-reproductive system health
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
when we take folic acid, we are actually blocking our body's ability to absorb folate, thus altering our body's ability to move through all of the processes listed above (and many more) with efficacy and ease.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
methylation is critical for differentiation of tissues, including that of the fingers and toes, and, as getting a lot of hype right now, oral tissues.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
we are hearing more and more about tethered oral tissues, commonly known as tongue and lip ties (can't forget about buccals, too!). one of the reasons we are seeing this show up more commonly is due to poor methylation in the body, in part due to this increase in folic acid intake as opposed to actual folate!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
if left unaddressed, these TOTs can alter the way our bodies can open, unwind, an integrate. one thing we always focus on with our babes is helping them to unlock the deep midline of connective tissue that can appear "tethered" as a result of undifferentiated oral tissues.
