The Senses in Which We Live

we live through the senses which give our brain context for where we are in this world.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

but did you know that the depth of our senses spans far beyond just taste, touch, smell, sight, and hearing?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

our nervous system is the house in which our perception lives. but let's talk about the roooms of which it is comprised.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

proprioception:

this is the room through which we detect where we are in space. this is how we detect movement, action, and location of everything from our fingers to our toes, from our eyelids to our tonges.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

interoception:

this room lets us know what we are feeling on the inside. are we feeling happy and light? are we feeling full? hungry? constipated? loved? alone? this is what allows us to perceive that we have a beating heart, that we are living, breathing, that we are going on--hopefully more gently than not.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

neuroception:

this room is one of the most important when it comes to the subtle substance with which we work as vitalistic chiropractors. this room is what detects whether or not danger is present, allowing our nervous systems and bodies to respond accordingly. this system works below the threshold of the conscious mind and is regulated by one of our favorite things to chat about at the inside space: the vagus nerve.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

exteroception:

this room is could be equated to the living room. it is easy to stay here. it is comfortable, it is familiar, and it is the most conscious of our rooms. exteroception is our ability to sense all that lives beyond the confines of our skin, connecting us to the outside world.
